The state-of-the-art
"Journey to Spaceship Earth" Education Center is based
upon a futuristic theme to capture the interest of visitors
to the center. Imagine yourself as an intergalactic
researcher from the planet Argon, a planet doomed from
the lack of knowledge about environmental issues pertaining
to recycling and solid waste management. Your mission:
Board a spaceship destined for planet Earth to gather
information about recycling, reusing, reducing, composting
and care of hazardous waste from the earthlings. This
information must be brought back to your home planet
Argon to assure the sustainability of your planet. |
| Our 6-foot
interactive "Recycling Robot" resides at the education
center and travels the County educating residents about
Rockland's solid waste management programs. Kids and
adults alike can talk to the robot about recycling and
caring for our environment. |
|
|
Aboard
the spaceship are seven interactive exhibits geared
towards reinforcing the many ways an individual can
help protect our environment. See a comparison of waste
generation vs. reduction from two Rockland households
in our "Tower of Trash" exhibit, and pedal to create
the energy needed to recycle a can on our "Alumina Power
Machine." |
| On either
side of the center are murals depicting the theme of
the Education Center. One mural shows the Argonians
journey from planet Argon to planet Earth, in hopes
of solving their solid waste problems. The other mural
identifies wildlife in the Torne Valley Region, which
is where the Education Center is located. |

See our
display of recycled robots made by students from around
RocklandCounty. These robots are part of a Recycled
Art Contest that the Authority hosts. After their trip,
visitors may be inspired to make their own robots out
of reused or recycled materials. |
| There is
a collection of photographs in the amphitheater that
show parts of the Ramapo River Watershed, located in
Rockland County. The collection, photographed by Richard
Raderman, illustrates the beauty of the watershed and
the importance of protecting it. |
